September 13th 2009 Squad Session :

Well done and thank you for all those attending the first squad training session which was a good turn out of students from across the Keibu Kan Dojos.

The Kata session focused on Heian Katas working on some techniques in the kata to improve timing and speed in turns. The lesson taken by Dave Gisby was mixed with all ages and grades but breaking out to brown and black belts working on Kanku Dai , Jion , Empi , and Bassai Dai.

After 1 hour of Kata we then progressed onto Kumite with Steve Bailes

Kumite warmed up with some light training sparring trying techniques and raising fitness levels, then moving into basic training for Kumite working on speed and pull back on punches ( Hika-te) then practising with a partner to gauge a target and drive, This followed by more sparring but in a more Shobu Ippon way to practice the basic techniques earlier.

Amanda and Cathy took ownership in assisting the juniors in practicing Sanbon Kumite in a safe area which after 1 hour of Kata and then 1 hour of basic Kumite they should be proud of that level of training and concentration well done.

The training was held with good spirit and all the students went away sweaty and hot.

Next Squad training session Sunday 18th October we look forward to seeing you all again. OSS.

October 18th 2009 Squad Session

Oct 09 Sqaud.jpg (44186 bytes)

Nice to see new faces to the Squad

Kata with Dave Gisby putting focus on the Heian Katas incorporating recent points from ABE Sensei courses in Germany and Switzerland.

Moving onto Bassai Dai and Kanku Dai aiming to understand consistent technical standards in Kata on transition in kata and not making it laboured. Good training and great lesson.

Kumite with Steve Bailes started with the refresher of techniques from the last session and the message was the importance of repetition and practice of key techniques.

Moving onto line work applying attacking and counter attacking using these techniques in action.

Part two of the lesson was an introduction of Kizami zuki using nagashi movement against a mae geri and kizami zuki attack.

Some found this different and showed the importance of practice with timing and distance vital to make them work and become natural.

Next Squad training Session Sunday 15th November we look forward to seeing you all again Oss

This was the third Squad Session and now getting a good flow of students.

Kata Lesson was well received warming through the Heian Katas and then splitting so Dave could focus on the Big 4 Katas with the 3rd Kyu and above then finally working on Tekki Shodan.

I took the Juniors through Heian Sandan with key technical points and then focused on Back Stance.

The pace is moving forward with Kata but still more to cover over the coming month and into 2010.

The Kumite lesson was planned to train fitness and spirit, The 1 minute Kumite circuit lesson.

With three stations comprising of Skipping, then on to Pad work, finally on to the tubes, 1 minute all out 1 minute changeover then off again.

There was a lot of hard work going on and this was combined with all age groups working together.

After several circuits and a few flush faces we finished with some technical points using a reverse Uraken followed straight in with mae geri topping up the list of armour

A nice warm down to another good workout well done all.

Sunday 13th December  2009  Kata Squad Session

Dec Squads Kata.JPG (1264637 bytes)

The final Squad session for 2009, and Dave and myself decided to dedicate to Kata with the forthcoming Keibu Kan Yearly Kata competition coming up next week we focused on practice for this event.

So two hours of Kata driven by Dave, Who went through Heian Katas picking out various points which we found it was attention to detail and sometimes stances and slowness and quickness of Kata.

We worked through the Heians and with a bit of free time to practice an hour had flown past and the muscles were starting to be worked.

The second hour Amanda Gisby took the Juniors on for team Kata and gave us the opportunity to focus on the Big 4 as we have come to know them has Kanku Dai, Empi, Bassai Dai, and Jion.

This Dave worked on as one on with six on six off then down to one on one making it competitive but still looking at detail. This gave me a chance to blow out some cobwebs and look at my kata and with the mirrors in front of you, you cannot miss the little faults that sensei highlights to you so a great way to keep focused and training these bits out.

After a few rounds time had moved on and we gave time for practice of any Kata, and this was good to see different Katas being practice, Kanku Sho, UNSU, Gankaku, Sochin, Gojushiho Sho and Dai and brown belts working on the big 4 as a team.

It was a great session and we all took a lot from.

Well done all and we can see a regular crowd forming for the Squad sessions.

January 24th 2010

We are now into 2010 and the Championship is moving closer and with the bad snow disrupting the south east of England we get underway with the first squad session of 2010.

Dave started the Kata lesson with the focus on Heian Nidan technically to JSKA way, then in between the lesson giving all levels a chance to practice there favourite Katas.

We moved onto taking the understanding of Heian Nidan further using memory muscle and visualisation training to see if we can let the body just make all the correct moves.

This was done by wearing blind folds and performing Heian Nidan to see our sense of correct direction from good stances and flow and letting the body flow correctly and the result was good.

Moving onto Kumite with myself we got the body warm by free fighting lightly then after half an hour with the juniors getting a good taste of free fighting, We could see some good techniques and also fun which was important to show them that it can be great fun without injuries this was a great confidence builder for them.

After getting the heart rate up we worked on the pair work of Sanbon Kumite for the juniors but getting the adults to see the importants of these moves to build technique flow, kime ,and then apply to a free fighting sequence in kumite.

This followed by practising the etiquette of entering the competition area and the focus to prepare yourself and give the message to your opponent that you are here to win and conquer in true budo spirit ,but without the attitude of showing off or being disrespectful.

Although the weather, colds and no doubt some man flu keep the numbers lower than normal everyone trained with great spirits.

Well done and we look forward to seeing you all on the Sunday February 7th Oss
